Issued to mark the lead-up to the 1992 quincentenary of Columbus's first Atlantic crossing, the Cayman Islands joined a wave of Caribbean nations producing commemorative silver in the late 1980s anticipating the anniversary. The quincentenary itself proved far more contentious than organizers expected — protests across Latin America reframed the event as one of conquest rather than discovery, and many planned celebrations were scaled back or quietly cancelled.
The Cayman Islands had no direct role in Columbus's voyages; he passed through the broader Caribbean basin on his fourth voyage in 1503, though the Caymans were not formally documented by Europeans until a 1503 Spanish chart notation.
