| Obverse description | Right-facing crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II after Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth definitive portrait, depicting the Queen with a jewelled crown and mature features in high relief against a mirror-polished field. The legend ELIZABETH II arcs along the left rim, 5 DOLLARS along the upper rim, and COOK ISLANDS along the right rim. The date 2016 appears in the lower field, and the engraver's initials IRB are incuse below the truncation of the bust. |

The Christ Pantocrator mosaic at Hagia Sophia — the likely iconographic source for this issue — survived the Byzantine Iconoclasm only because it was plastered over, re-emerging centuries later. Cook Islands has leaned heavily on religious and artistic icon series since the 2000s, partnering with the Pobjoy Mint and later B.H. Mayer to produce collector bullion rounds that circulate almost exclusively through the secondary market rather than the islands themselves.
