Additional information

Niue has been a vehicle for commemorative issues licensed through the New Zealand Mint since the 1990s, its sovereignty providing issuing authority for coins that have no practical connection to the island's roughly 1,500 residents. This piece is part of that machinery — a bullion-format collector item aimed squarely at the secondary market, not circulation.

Carmen, Bizet's 1875 opera, premiered to a hostile Paris reception and the composer died believing it a failure. He never learned it would become one of the most performed operas in history.
