Tokelau has no mint of its own and no domestic precious metals industry — these small-format gold issues are struck under contract by the New Zealand Mint on behalf of the territory's government, with revenue flowing into Tokelau's public finances. The atoll's GDP is negligible, and collector coinage constitutes a meaningful fraction of its official income.
