The Battle of Monte Cassino was four separate Allied assaults between January and May 1944, ultimately broken by Polish II Corps troops who reached the ruined abbey on 18 May after some of the most brutal close-quarters fighting of the Italian Campaign. New Zealand, British, Indian, and Free French forces had all failed in earlier attempts. Polish casualties in the final assault alone exceeded 900 killed.
Niue's licensing arrangement with the New Zealand Mint has made it a prolific issuer of commemorative gold for the collector market — this piece carries no meaningful monetary function for the island's 1,600 residents.
