The Battle of Kursk in July–August 1943 was the largest tank engagement in history, involving roughly 6,000 armored vehicles across the German Operation Citadel and the Soviet counter-offensives that followed. The German failure there effectively ended any realistic prospect of a strategic offensive on the Eastern Front.
