To the lower left, the bilingual 40th anniversary inscription '40 YEARS ANS' appears, while the dual dates '1979 / 2019' are positioned to the right. The country name 'CANADA' arcs along the upper periphery, and the fineness and weight designations '9999 FINE GOLD 1/10 OZ OR PUR' are inscribed along the lower border. The "Gold Maple Leaf" fractional sets have been a recurring RCM commercial product since the mid-1990s, bundling fractional gold coins primarily for the bullion investor and gift market rather than circulation. The 2019 anniversary issue specifically marked the 40th year of the Gold Maple Leaf program, which launched in 1979 as Canada's direct answer to the South African Krugerrand's dominance of the global gold bullion coin market.
The .9999 fineness standard — four nines — was itself a deliberate point of distinction when introduced, as the Krugerrand was alloyed to 22 karat. Canada later pushed to .99999 on select issues, but the four-nine standard remains the program baseline.
