Admiral William "Bull" Halsey commanded the U.S. Third Fleet during some of the most aggressive naval operations in the Pacific, including the controversial decision to chase Ozawa's decoy fleet at Leyte Gulf in October 1944 — a move that left the invasion beaches dangerously exposed and remains debated by naval historians. Niue issued a string of commemorative five-dollar pieces around 1990 honoring Allied commanders, this being one of several copper-nickel issues in that run.
Halsey died in 1959, just short of his 77th birthday, during a vacation at Fishers Island, New York.
