Niue has operated as a prolific licensing platform for foreign-themed bullion and commemorative issues since the early 2000s, contracting with the New Zealand Mint to produce coins that have no practical circulation function on the island's roughly 1,600-person population. This Lincoln piece falls squarely into that commercial program — the $5 face value is nominal against the silver content, and Niue's name on the coin is essentially a minting jurisdiction of convenience rather than any expression of national interest in American history.
Lincoln's 1865 assassination by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theatre came just five days after Lee's surrender at Appomattox.
