The western taipan (Oxyuranus microlepidotus) holds the distinction of producing the most toxic venom of any land snake measured by subcutaneous LD50 in mice — a fact established through research conducted largely at the University of Melbourne's Australian Venom Research Unit. This 2020 issue is part of the Royal Australian Mint's ongoing Australian Feared & Dangerous series, which has drawn consistent collector demand partly because the subject matter sits well outside the patriotic fauna that dominates most Australian commemorative programs.
