Issued to mark the Australian team's participation in the Tokyo Paralympic Games, which were themselves postponed from 2020 to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic — making this one of the few commemorative coins whose subject event post-dated its release by a full year. The Royal Australian Mint's selective gold plating on the silver centre was applied to distinguish specific design elements, a technique the Mint has deployed with increasing frequency on its collector bimetallic issues since the mid-2010s.
