Issued to mark Australia's participation in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, which were ultimately postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic — making this one of the few modern commemoratives issued for a games that did not occur in its nominal year. The Royal Australian Mint released the coin under the original 2020 date regardless, a decision consistent with the IOC's own insistence on retaining the "Tokyo 2020" branding throughout the delay.
