The Victoria Cross for Australia is a distinct decoration from the British Victoria Cross, established in 1991 to allow Australia to make independent awards through its own honours system. The separation matters: Australian recipients from 1991 onward hold an award under Australian law, not the imperial warrant. Only four VCs for Australia had been awarded at the time of this issue's release, all posthumously, all to soldiers killed in Afghanistan — Roberts-Smith's award, the sole living recipient's, came in 2011.
