The 2012 'Town Halls' series was part of a broader Royal Australian Mint program celebrating significant civic architecture across Australian capital cities. Melbourne Town Hall, opened in 1870 and significantly expanded in 1887 to mark Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, served as the site where The Beatles famously addressed an estimated 300,000 people from the balcony in 1964 — still one of the largest public gatherings in Melbourne's history. The antiqued finish was applied deliberately to evoke the aged stonework of the building itself.
