The Mutiny on the Bounty is one of those events so thoroughly mythologized — largely through Hollywood — that the documented history gets buried. The actual mutiny in April 1789 was led by Fletcher Christian against Lieutenant William Bligh, whose disciplinary methods had eroded loyalty during the five-month breadfruit-collecting anchorage at Tahiti. Bligh was cast adrift in an open boat with 18 loyalists and navigated roughly 3,600 miles to Timor — one of the most remarkable open-sea voyages on record.
The Australian connection is direct: Bligh later served as Governor of New South Wales from 1806 to 1808, where he faced yet another mutiny, the Rum Rebellion.
