Additional information

The Sydney 2000 Olympic series from the Perth Mint ran to 28 individual silver proof coins — one of the largest commemorative programs ever undertaken by an Australian mint for a single event. Pad printing, used here to apply color directly onto the coin surface, was still a relatively novel technique in mass commemorative production at the time and created immediate collector controversy over whether colored coins constituted genuine numismatic items or glorified medallions.

That debate suppressed secondary market prices for years. Many original purchasers deaccessioned full sets at a loss well into the 2000s.
