The SML (Susanna Blunt Modified Likeness) designation marks a subtle but deliberate revision to the fourth portrait, introduced to address die-wear issues that had accelerated on the unmodified Blunt effigy. The radial line background and security mark — a maple leaf containing a micro-laser-engraved "SML" — were added specifically to deter the sophisticated Chinese counterfeit operation that flooded secondary markets with .999 Maple Leafs around 2014, prompting the Royal Canadian Mint to file legal action and overhaul the entire bullion series simultaneously.
