John Monash was arguably the most capable Allied commander of the First World War's final year, and his reputation was well established long before any coin honored him. His 1918 coordinated-arms offensives — combining infantry, artillery, tanks, and air support with a precision his British counterparts rarely matched — are still studied at staff colleges. He was knighted on the battlefield by King George V in July 1918, one of the few such ceremonies conducted under active service conditions.
This release coincided with the centenary commemorations of the Armistice. The Royal Australian Mint issued this as part of a broader 2018 WWI centenary program.
