New Zealand's native short-tailed bat — one of only three terrestrial mammal species present before Polynesian settlement — became the unlikely subject of a circulation-weight commemorative at a moment when DOC-led conservation programs were reporting genuine population recoveries in predator-controlled sanctuaries.
