New Zealand's native bee series targets a genuine conservation gap — the country has 28 endemic bee species, none of which produce honey and most of which nest alone in the ground rather than in hives, making them largely invisible to the public despite their ecological importance. This coin was issued in 2023, making it one of the final pieces struck under the fourth portrait of Elizabeth II before the transition to Charles III coinage began in earnest across Commonwealth mints.
The "posthumous" designation places this squarely in a small and transitionally awkward category: coins bearing Elizabeth's effigy but authorized and produced after her death in September 2022.
