Reverse description The reverse features an intricate, symmetrically composed Māori kōwhaiwhai (rafter pattern) design representing Te Hau Raki, one of the four winds from the Ngā Hau e Whā series. The elaborate curvilinear motifs, rendered in relief against a frosted background, fill the entire field with traditional Māori scroll work. The legend 'NGĀ HAU E WHĀ • THE FOUR WINDS • TE HAU RAKI' curves along the upper rim, while 'FIVE DOLLARS • RIMA TĀRA' is inscribed along the lower rim. The design, by engraver Dave Burke, reflects the artistry of traditional Māori decorative arts with exceptional precision befitting a proof striking.
