Ngā Hau e Whā — "The Four Winds" — is a whakataukī, a Māori proverb, invoking the idea that a message sent on the winds will reach all peoples of all directions. This coin is the second in the Royal New Zealand Mint's four-part series dedicating each release to one of those winds; Te Hau-ā-uru is the west wind, associated in Māori tradition with rain and the bringing of change from across the Tasman.
The series marked a deliberate effort by the mint to embed te reo Māori naming conventions directly into legal tender coinage — a meaningful shift from earlier commemorative practice.
