The New Zealand Falcon — kārearea — was chosen for this issue partly as a conservation signal: the species had been declining sharply through the latter twentieth century due to habitat loss and predation pressure from introduced mammals. By 2006, captive breeding and release programs were underway on both main islands, and the Reserve Bank's decision to feature the bird on a circulating denomination carried an implicit endorsement of those efforts.
KM#148 is the copper-nickel circulation strike; a silver proof version was issued concurrently, which occasionally causes attribution confusion in dealer inventories.
