The kererū (New Zealand wood pigeon) coin was part of a native birds circulation commemorative series issued by the Reserve Bank in the early 2000s. New Zealand's $5 coin had a troubled commercial life — retailers and the public largely rejected it, finding the denomination awkward between the $2 coin and paper notes, and it was discontinued not long after these issues appeared.
The fourth portrait of Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley, was introduced to New Zealand coinage in 1999.
