| Additional information |
The "Investigator" in this series refers to Matthew Flinders' vessel during his 1801–1803 circumnavigation of Australia — the first confirmed complete circuit of the continent. Flinders had lobbied the Royal Navy specifically for a ship suited to shallow coastal survey work, and the Investigator, a converted sloop, was his compromise. The voyage produced the first reasonably accurate charts of the Australian coastline, though the ship itself was found to be so rotten by journey's end that it was condemned at Port Jackson and never sailed again.
