Part of Perth Mint's long-running Australian Nugget and wildlife bullion program, this gold proof issue belongs to a subset of fractional pieces — at 1/40 oz — that were produced primarily for the collector market rather than bullion stacking. The frilled neck lizard had already appeared on the Australian one-cent coin from 1966 until decimal coinage's smallest denomination was abolished in 1992, giving the species a particular resonance in Australian numismatic memory.
