Part of Perth Mint's long-running Australian Nugget and nature bullion series, this small-denomination gold piece belongs to a reptile sub-series that leaned into international collector appetite for Australian fauna during the mid-2000s bullion boom. The frilled neck lizard had already achieved a degree of global recognition after appearing on the Australian two-cent coin from 1966 until that denomination's withdrawal in 1992 — a piece of numismatic continuity that was almost certainly not accidental.
At one-twenty-fifth troy ounce, the denomination is nominal; no one was spending these at face value.
