Issued as part of the Royal Australian Mint's ongoing effort to push the boundaries of circulating coin technology, this piece uses pad printing — an industrial process borrowed from the consumer goods sector — to apply color directly to the coin's surface. The technique had seen limited application in world coinage before Australian mints began experimenting with it seriously in the 2000s.
The "Distinctly Australian" series was conceived to celebrate native fauna and landscape iconography at a collector price point while retaining legal tender status.
