New Zealand's collector coinage program has leaned heavily on endemic wildlife since the 1990s, but the Chatham Island Tawaki — found only on the remote Chatham Islands roughly 800 kilometers east of the South Island — rarely makes the shortlist. The subspecies was formally separated from the Fiordland crested penguin only through molecular work published in the 2000s, giving it a taxonomic identity recent enough that earlier issues would have simply called it something else.
