The "SML" designation refers to the Maple Leaf's security upgrade introduced that year: a laser-micro-engraved radial maple leaf in the field, visible only under magnification, added in direct response to the proliferation of high-quality counterfeits entering the market from Asia. It was a significant enough development that the Royal Canadian Mint filed international patents on the technology. The 2013 issue also marked the 25th anniversary of the Silver Maple Leaf program, which launched in 1988 — itself a response to the South African Krugerrand embargo that had suppressed bullion coin competition through the 1980s.
