| Beschrijving keerzijde | Two racing yachts under full sail are depicted in dynamic competition, their large overlapping spinnakers and mainsails filling the field as they tack across a wind-swept sea, with spray rendered in high relief along the waterline. The curved legend AMERICA'S CUP 2003 arcs across the upper portion of the field, with NEW ZEALAND continuing along the right periphery. The denomination $5 appears in the right field. The overall composition conveys the speed and drama of the America's Cup yacht race. |

New Zealand's commemorative five-dollar program of the early 2000s leaned heavily on sporting prestige, and the 2000 America's Cup defense by Team New Zealand — won convincingly at home in Auckland — gave the Reserve Bank an obvious subject. This coin followed that victory rather than anticipating it, issued while New Zealand still held the Auld Mug.
The tenure was short. Swiss team Alinghi stripped the Cup from New Zealand in 2003, ending a dominant run that had included back-to-back victories in 1995 and 2000.
