Cook Islands dollar coinage occupies an odd constitutional niche: the islands are self-governing in free association with New Zealand, meaning these pieces are legal tender locally yet rarely circulate in any meaningful volume, with the New Zealand dollar handling virtually all day-to-day commerce. The 2015 aluminium bronze five-dollar pieces were produced in this environment — collectible by design from the outset, not through any retrospective scarcity.
