New Zealand's commemorative dollar program in the early 1990s leaned heavily on international sporting events, and this issue followed Lillehammer's 1994 Winter Olympics — the first Winter Games held on a two-year offset cycle after the IOC split the Summer and Winter schedules in 1992. The shift meant Lillehammer followed Albertville by just two years, an anomaly that won't recur.
