Tom Roberts' painting Shearing the Rams (1890) had already been hanging in the National Gallery of Victoria for decades when the Royal Australian Mint selected it for this issue — part of a broader Masterpieces in Silver series that drew directly from Australian colonial and Heidelberg School art. Roberts himself had spent months on Queensland and New South Wales stations researching the work, and the painting's association with nationalist sentiment around the Federation period made it an obvious institutional choice a century later.
The .925 sterling specification, rather than the .999 fine used in many contemporary bullion releases, reflects the RAM's preference at the time for harder alloys in proof and collector strikes.
