Sir John Forrest, the subject of this 1994 issue, was Western Australia's first premier and one of the most consequential inland explorers of the nineteenth century — a man who crossed the continent twice before entering politics. The Royal Australian Mint's Masterpieces in Silver series used proof-quality strikes to rehabilitate figures who had been largely absent from mainstream Australian commemorative coinage, Forrest among them.
The .925 sterling specification — rather than the .999 fine silver more common in later Australian issues — reflects the series' conscious nod to traditional coinage alloys.
