The $5 coin was introduced specifically for the 1988 Bicentennial, marking two hundred years since the First Fleet's arrival at Botany Bay. It was the first circulating $5 denomination in Australian history, and the Royal Australian Mint produced it in enormous quantities for general circulation — a decision that proved optimistic, as the public largely refused to use a coin of that size and value in everyday transactions.
Within a few years, the $5 note remained dominant and the coin quietly faded from circulation without ever being formally demonetised.
