Australia's platinum koala series launched in 1988, making Perth one of the earliest government mints to issue platinum bullion coins commercially. The 1/20 oz denomination — this being the smallest in the series — was added partly to capture retail buyers priced out of the full-ounce format, which by the mid-1990s carried a significant premium over gold equivalents. Platinum briefly overtook gold in spot value during this period, driven by automotive catalytic converter demand from Japanese manufacturers.
