John McDouall Stuart completed the first successful south-to-north crossing of the Australian continent in 1862, reaching the northern coast near present-day Darwin on his sixth and final expedition into the interior. The crossing nearly killed him — he returned to Adelaide blind in one eye and so debilitated he had to be carried on a stretcher. He died in London four years later, largely destitute, having received none of the £2,000 prize money awarded for the crossing.
This issue belongs to the RAM's early 1990s "Masterpieces in Silver" program, which paired proof-quality strikes with notable Australian historical figures largely overlooked by regular coinage.
