Dunedin's 1998 commemorative marks the city's 150th anniversary, rooted in the 1848 arrival of the John Wickliffe and Philip Laing carrying the first organized Scottish Free Church settlers. The settlement's intensely Presbyterian character shaped everything from its street grid to its early prohibition on alcohol sales — an influence that persisted well into the twentieth century.
The .925 silver proof was struck by the Royal Australian Mint under contract, as New Zealand has never operated its own mint facility.
