| 背面描述 | The central design depicts a detailed rendering of the Dutch VOC vessel De Heemskerck under full sail, positioned to the right against a globe defined by meridian and latitude lines. To the left of the globe, an outline map of New Zealand is shown, recalling Abel Tasman's 1642 voyage of discovery aboard the ship. The denomination $5 appears in the upper field above the globe, and the ship's name DE HEEMSKERCK is inscribed in a straight legend along the lower border. The composition effectively evokes the era of early European exploration of the South Pacific. |

De Heemskerck was one of two ships under Abel Tasman on his 1642 voyage — the expedition that made the first recorded European contact with New Zealand, though Tasman never set foot ashore. Four Māori were killed in a skirmish at what he named Murderers Bay before the fleet departed without landing. New Zealand Post issued this coin in 1996 as part of a series marking the explorers who shaped the country's recorded history.
KM#102 is a bullion-adjacent commemorative, struck in proof format with relatively modest collector uptake at the time of issue.
