Reverse description A central shield divided into six quarters displays the principal emblems of New Zealand: the Southern Cross stars, a sailing ship, a ram's fleece, a sheaf of wheat, crossed hammers, and a crowned royal cypher 'E' within a laurel wreath at centre; the shield is surmounted and flanked by Maori-style koru scroll ornaments, with two carved canoe prow motifs flanking the design on either side. A beaded inner border frames the entire composition. The legend '40th ANNIVERSARY OF THE CORONATION' arcs around the upper periphery, and 'FIVE DOLLARS' is inscribed along the lower margin, separated by small cross ornaments.
