Additional information

Abel Tasman reached the coast of what Europeans would call Van Diemen's Land in November 1642, becoming the first European to sight the island now known as Tasmania — yet he never set foot on it and left without realizing it was an island at all. The 1993 RAM Masterpieces in Silver series was a proof-quality program aimed squarely at the collector market, with strictly limited mintages and no circulation intent.

Tasman sailed under commission from the Dutch East India Company, searching for a southern continent rich enough to justify trade routes.
