The ECU — European Currency Unit — ceased to exist on January 1, 1999, when it was replaced by the euro at a fixed 1:1 rate. Liberia's decision to strike ECU-denominated pieces in 2001, two years after the unit's official abolition, places this coin firmly in the collector novelty category rather than anything approaching monetary function.
