Liberia's early 2000s commemorative program was essentially a wholesale licensing operation — designs were contracted to external minting houses, predominantly the Bavarian State Mint and several private European producers, with Liberia providing little more than its name and legal tender status. The "Christ and the Apostles" series was part of this wave, issued across multiple years with each apostle receiving a separate coin.

Simon the Zealot is among the most historically obscure of the twelve, mentioned by name in the synoptic gospels and Acts with virtually no further biographical detail surviving antiquity.
