Obverse description The field is dramatically divided into two contrasting halves: the left portion rendered in matte finish depicts a flock of birds in flight rising above multiple strands of torn barbed wire, symbolising liberation, while the right portion features a mirror-polished black field with additional barbed wire strands and a solitary bird. Centrally positioned in the upper field is the crowned Public Seal of Niue, encircled by a wreath and surmounted by a royal crown, with a scroll below bearing the motto ATUA NIUE TUKULAGI and two crossed spears. The legend FIVE DOLLARS is inscribed in relief along the upper rim. The Czech Mint mark (CM) appears to the lower left of the seal, and the designer's initials mh are incused to the lower right.
