Oscar Wilde published The Picture of Dorian Gray in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890, but the editor quietly deleted roughly five hundred words before print — passages deemed too explicit in their suggestion of homoeroticism. Wilde restored some of that material for the 1891 book edition, but the original excisions weren't fully documented until a 2011 Harvard scholarly edition reconstructed the uncensored text from Wilde's typescript.
