Additional information

The Colossus of Rhodes — a bronze statue of the sun god Helios erected around 280 BC to celebrate Rhodes' defeat of a Macedonian siege — stood for only 54 years before an earthquake toppled it in 226 BC. Ptolemy III of Egypt offered to fund its reconstruction; the Rhodians declined, citing an oracle. It was never rebuilt, and by the time medieval travelers began cataloging the Seven Wonders, no one could agree on where it had even stood.

This is one of a series of fractional gold issues from Niue pairing the accession of Charles III with ancient wonder iconography — a combination driven entirely by the commemorative bullion market rather than any historical connection between the two subjects.
