Niue has operated as a licensing vehicle for novelty bullion since the early 2000s, leveraging its sovereign mint agreement with the New Zealand Mint to issue pop-culture collector pieces that have no meaningful circulation function. The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man originates from the 1984 Columbia Pictures film Ghostbusters, where it was conceived by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis as the physical form chosen by Gozer the Destructor — selected, ironically, because it seemed harmless.
