Mont Saint-Michel was seized from the Benedictine order and converted into a political prison during the Revolution, holding figures including Auguste Blanqui in the nineteenth century — a function so notorious that Victor Hugo campaigned publicly against it. The abbey was returned to monastic use only in 1966.
