Lü Dongbin is one of the Eight Immortals of Daoist tradition, a figure whose historical basis — a Tang dynasty scholar who allegedly passed the imperial examinations in 837 AD — became so thoroughly mythologized that separating the man from the legend is effectively impossible. His cult spread well beyond China into Vietnam, Korea, and diaspora communities globally, which is presumably why a Pacific island nation with a population under 2,000 has found a ready export market minting his likeness in silver.
